Teacher Workshop: Black in Blue: The Story of D.C.’s Black Civil War Regiment
In the spring of 1863, the First Regiment, United States Colored Troops was formed in Washington D.C. C.R. Gibbs, historian, and author of "Black, Copper & Bright: The District of Columbia's Black Civil War Regiment" shares the story of these soldiers. Their valor and sacrifice on the battlefield made a decisive contribution to the final Union victory of the Civil War. Then, teachers become the historians and dive into some of the primary sources Gibbs relied upon in his research.
